Two different things are worth separating here: this website, and the Lightbox application you install. They are not the same and they do not collect the same things.
This website
This site runs no analytics at all. No script counts your visit, nothing is loaded from anyone else's server, and there is no cookie to consent to. If we ever want to know whether anyone is reading this, the download counts GitHub already publishes will answer it without putting a tracker on your machine.
What it records:
- Which pages were loaded, and how long they took
- The site you arrived from, if any
- Country, browser, operating system and rough device type
What it does not record: your IP address in any stored form, any identifier that persists between visits, and anything that could pick you out from anyone else who visited the same page from the same country on the same kind of device. There is no advertising on this site and nothing here is sold or shared with anyone.
Because none of it is personal data and nothing is stored on your device, there is no cookie banner to click through. That is the point of choosing this over the alternative.
The Lightbox application
Lightbox does not send anything anywhere today. It has no account system, no sync, and no update check.
That will change: we intend to add anonymous usage reporting, so we can see which controls people actually reach for and stop guessing. When it arrives you will be asked on first run, you will be able to say no, and you will be able to turn it off afterwards in Preferences.
The line we will hold, and which you can check in the source because the source is public: it will never include your files, your filenames, or anything from inside your photographs. We do not upload your pictures, we do not look at them, and we will not train anything on them.
Getting in touch
Questions about any of this go to [email protected]. If you think something here is wrong, or that the code does not match what this page says, please open an issue on GitHub, because that is a bug worth fixing quickly.
